You Really Should Be Watching Stranger Things
Despite me being a pop culture blogger, sometimes I go really hard against the hype. If too many people are raving about something, I won't watch it on purpose. I cannot tell you the reason why. But my brain just goes nope.
So last week after everybody and they mama told about Stranger Things, I sat down and watched the first episode and was very unimpressed. "This is why I don't fall for the hype," I whispered to myself.
But then yesterday, I went to watch The Get Down to see if the hype was real. But I share a Netflix account with someone and noticed that they were midway through episode 3 of The Get Down. And since I don't pay for it, I decided to be respectful and watch something else, so to Stranger Things it was.
And holy crap, it is so good. I was so wrong. Very wrong. Somewhere around episode 3, I realized I had stopped playing around on my phone and was fully immersed in this show. Here are some thoughts I had without giving away any spoilers:
- I thought this show was going to be scarier. If you're a scaredy cat like me who watches scary movies from between their fingers, you should do fine with this show.
- Mike Wheeler has the worst parents in the whole wide world. His father is definitely on my list for most pathetic men in a movie or series. Not only was he disconnected, he was just down right sad and pitiful. Mike's mother baffles me. She recognizes nothing strange going on in her house and when she does only makes the smallest of efforts to really figure it out. Their kids ran that house. If they were the ones paying the mortgage I wouldn't even be surprised.
- The five actors who played the main kids (Eleven, Will, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas) are really good actors. The kids really carry most of the plot of this show, and they carry it so well. The emotion on their faces, the awkwardness of being their age, the essence of children, they portrayed it so well I almost forgot the show wasn't real.
- Benny was one of my favorite characters. For those who already watched the show, yes I know but still. Other favorites are Mike, Eleven, Will, and the Sheriff.
I really can't say much else without giving away spoilers. But I'm telling you, this show is so well done. You're getting at least four different stories, but it's done so you barely realize you're getting all of these stories. The suspense is great. The acting is awesome. The directing is great. You just...you have to watch the show. You have to. Give it more than one episode and let it grab you in with the suspense.
