Word of Advice: Blogmas Day 5

Word of Advice: Blogmas Day 5

I hate when you’re talking to someone about hip hop and they say “I don’t listen to the hip hop that’s out nowadays, because all of the rappers are trash.”

Word of advice. Stop the conversation. Get up. Walk away.

If someone is wholeheartedly telling you that all the rappers out nowadays are trash it’s for one of the following reasons:

1. They are old. (Harsh, but true)

All of their memories are tied up with Nas or Wu-Tang or Big Daddy Kane or Run DMC. The reality is that they’re not listening to hip hop past what’s on the radio. They are no longer on the search for good hip hop, and you can’t convince them to go searching for it

2. They are stuck in the 90s.

There are certain types of hip hop heads that will never leave the 90s. It doesn’t matter if they were born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s or were born in 1995. They are convinced that nothing good happened musically past 1999. Maybe they’ll creep in the very early 2000s, maybe. But they are not leaving this arena.

3. They are delusional.

Explanation not needed.

There are too many rappers and sub-genres in hip hop for someone to say that ALL rappers nowadays are trash. J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Logic, Drake, Mac Miller, Chance the Rapper, Wale, Big Sean…nobody?! Not ONE person is good enough? How is that possible?

How do you listen to Good Kid M.A.A.D City and tell me Kendrick is trash? How do you listen to Under Pressure from Logic and tell me he’s not talented? How do you go to a J. Cole concert and tell me there’s nothing there?

It’s also a great time to live because it is so much easier to find up and coming and underground artists who have quality music and crazy word play. Soundcloud is full of talented rappers, who will provide you any type of style you’re looking for.

It’s not a bad thing to be phased out of hip hop or stuck in the 90s. But trying to convince them that hip hop nowadays isn’t trash is pointless and impossible.

Oh. And other trigger words for you to leave a conversation?

"I can't understand any of these rappers! They be mumbling their words, and they all sound alike."

"They're all singers nowadays. They be singin and autotuning all on the track."

"All they talk about is booty shaking and getting high."

Save yourself the headache. Stop the conversation.
